Camping Sites, Motorhomes, Touring & Lodge Parks in Luberon
The Luberon is an area of pristine natural beauty in central Provence in southern France. It is famed for its hill top villages that date back over 1,000 years such as Gordes, Roussillon, Bonnieux, Lacoste and Menerbes. The area is also rich in culture and history and is one of the top tourist destinations in the region. Staying on a holiday park in the Luberon provides easy access to the wealth of local attractions such as the local markets, lavender fields, vineyards and countless castles.
Surprisingly, the Luberon is home to three massifs called Lesser Luberon, the Greater Luberon and the Eastern Luberon with the highest point being 1,256m so you may see some snow during the winter months.
Roussillon is one of the must see villages in France and sits at the foot of the Monts de Vaucluse in the Luberon in central Provence. It is famed for being one of the largest ochre deposits in the world giving its towering cliffs their red and yellow colours in stark contract to the surrounding pine forests.
The truffle season runs from November to mid-March in Provence with around 75% of all French black truffles coming from Vaucluse. To get a feel of how this delicacy is, pop down to the Friday morning truffle market in Carpentras. Truffles are expensive and a kilo will set you back between €800-1000 although 40-60g is more than enough. If you want to go truffle hunting, you don't need a pig or trained dog, just spot some truffle flies and start digging.
Gordes is a medieval village clinging on to the side of a rock and is steeped in history and culture. It is provides spectacular panoramic views of the Luberon countryside and is one of Provence's premier tourist destinations. The village is a labyrinth of narrow stone passages that conceal wonderful boutiques and cafes. The upper levels of the village is where you will find the castle, church of Saint-Firmin, restaurants and shops.
